Central to downtown McKenzie is the
scenic "Downtown Veterans Memorial
Park". Its towering trees and landscaped
corners surround the central gazebo that
shelters various events during the year.
The park is beautified by city
caretakers as well as by members of Beta
Sigma Phi Sorority and McKenzie Garden
Club.
The park contains a World War I era cannon
and the Carroll County War Memorial,
upon which are inscribed the names of
countians whose lives were lost in wars
throughout history. A landscaped corner
of the park is dedicated to McKenzie's
Company A, 230th Engineer Battalion
National Guard unit and to Dusty
Carroll, son of Pat Carroll and Debra
Carroll, who was killed near Baghdad on
July 31, 2005, when an IED exploded
alongside the Hummer in which he was a
passenger.
Downtown businesses include a pharmacy
and gift shop, clothing
stores, furniture stores, gift shops, the
public library, restaurant, a newspaper
office and more.
Also located around the downtown square is
the Gordon Browning Genealogical Museum,
which contains extensive history on the
city of McKenzie and neighboring
communities, genealogical information, and
numerous displays of historical
significance.
The downtown area is rich in
history with many of the buildings having been
maintained since the early 1900s, including
one of the areas only remaining railroad
depots.
